Mr. Magoo

Mr. Magoo is a cartoon character created at the UPA animation studio in 1949. Voiced by Jim Backus, Quincy Magoo is a wealthy, short-statured retiree who gets into a series of comical situations as a result of his nearsightedness, compounded by his stubborn refusal to admit the problem. However, through uncanny streaks of luck, the situation always seem to work itself out for him, leaving him no worse than before. Because UPA was shut down its animation studio in 1959, the animation for these Mr. Magoo cartoons was done by Jack Kinney Productions and Larry Harmon Pictures, starring Mr. Magoo, and his houseboy Cholley who was a Chinese stereotype and comically fractured English pronunciation. In 1959, Mr. Magoo starred in 1001 Arabian Night, directed by Jack Kinney, UPA's first feature-length production. In 1997, a live-action comedy film based on the original 1960s cartoon of the same name was produced by Walt Disney Pictures and starred Leslie Nielsen.

The cartoon series features the voices of Jim Backus as Mr. Magoo. Benny Rubin as Charlie.

Chilly Willy

Welcome to New Classics Cartoon Page. Here is the first cartoon character I will explain about.

Chilly Willy is a funny animal cartoon character, a diminutive anthropomorphic penguin living in Alaska. He was created by Paul J. Smith for the Walter Lantz studio in 1953. The character soon became the second most popular Lantz/Universal character behind Woody Woodpecker.

Chilly Willy appeared in 50 theatrical short subjects produced by Lantz from 1953 to 1972, most of which involve his attempts to stay warm, and often meeting opposition from a dog named Smedley. There were times, however, when Chilly and Smedley got along, as they did in Vicious Viking and Fractured Friendship. Ironically, Chilly never referred to Smedley by name. Most times that Chilly was in opposition with Smedley, it wound up with the two of them being friends at the end. Two of Chilly's friends in the later cartoons were Maxie the Polar Bear and Gooney the "Gooney Bird" Albatross. Maxie has appeared with Chilly more than Gooney has. There have been only two cartoons in which all three characters have appeared together: Gooney's Goofy Landings and Airlift a la Carte.

The cartoon short subjects stars the one and only Daws Butler as many voices of Chilly Willy, Smedley, Wally Walrus, Maxie, and Gooney.
